David Burns - First thoughts on the PS3

by Xequted - 29th March 2007

David has sent us in his first thoughts on the PS3, which we're more than happy to publish.

The Playstation 3 by David Burns

Hurray, the Sony Playstation 3 has finally hit the shelves here in the UK and Europe. March 23rd saw stacks of consoles delivered to retailers up and down the country and pretty much every Sony fan queued up outside their local video game store.

As many set off home with their newly bought consoles, which they had spent many an hour scrapping and saving for, comparisons arose between the Xbox360, which has been around since for over a year now, and the brand spanking new Playstation 3.

The Playstation 3 is a heavy console weighting in at 5kg, so the walk home was not a pleasurable one for most fans. Its great black sleek exterior is a work of modern Art, compared to the concave appearance the 360 proudly shows off.

There are two main factors that console gamers will take into account when comparing any new console with the last:

• Games/Graphics
• Features/Online Capabilities

The two major games that rocketed out of the stores along with the PS3 were MotorStorm and Resistance: Fall of Man.

The games themselves look stunning. Motorstorm has some awesome effects, such as when mud splashes on the screen and the vehicles are fantastic to handle. The gameplay keeps you busy for hours and it's an ideal game to play with your mates.

Resistance: Fall of Man is an eye opener. Set in the 1940s, it tells of a world where a virus has spread across Europe and is enslaving mankind. Once again, the visuals are great and gameplay is top notch. It even has a Coop campaign feature, which will be sure to keep you killing nasty Hybrids time and time again.

Features and Online Capabilities

A lot of people frowned upon the lack of features the PS3 provides; not really surprising when the PSN (PlayStation Network) is being compared to the legendary might of Xbox Live!

There are a few similarities and a few different aspects of each online service.

Both offer voice and video chat, but with the PS3 you have to leave your current game to read and respond to messages and voice chat requests. I'm hoping that Sony will see this flaw and remedy the problem quickly.

What the PSN has over XBL is the ability to have voice and video conferencing, which too many people, including myself, is a great feature. People who own a PSP will be familiar with the PS3 interface, which features a cross tiled menu system instead of the blade system that Xbox360 offers.

Also, the Playstation store is an interesting place to check out. Unlike XBL, where you need to use Microsoft Points to purchase gaming items, movies and games, the Playstation store deals with normal currency, plain and simple. For example: Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection costs a mere £6.99, which in MS points is around 800.

Overall the Sony Playstation 3 is a console that will just get better and better. I know you're thinking 'It lacks great titles', but there's going to be plenty to watch out for in the coming months.
