BioWare is an electronic entertainment company specializing in creating computer and console video games. Founded in 1995, BioWare Corp. is a privately owned Canadian corporation based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk are the Joint CEOs and Co-Executive Producers of BioWare's games. BioWare currently employs over 180 people
In July 2000, BioWare Corp. and LucasArts Entertainment announced a partnership to produce the first role playing game in the Star Wars universe, titled Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. In August 2002, BioWare announced two new projects in development, both role-playing games, based on new intellectual properties, created and owned by BioWare.
In September 2003, BioWare announced Jade Empire, an action role-playing game based on a new BioWare-owned intellectual property, to be published by Microsoft Game Studios for the Xbox video game system in late 2004. BioWare is also developing two additional original intellectual properties. One of the titles will be developed exclusively for PC. BioWare is also developing a next-generation engine project. BioWare also licenses its game engine technology which has powered a number of critically acclaimed role-playing games: Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter, and Icewind Dale II - all developed by the publisher for the Baldur's Gate franchise, Black Isle Studios/Interplay.
