Frontlines: Fuel of War

Developer: Kaos Studios / Publisher: THQ

Preview: Hands on with Frontlines: Fuel of War - Xbox 360

26th March 2007

We were lucky enough to attend a recent gamer's day hosted by THQ, which was held in a nightclub in a buttock clenchingly dangerous looking district of San Francisco. Hey, we're not complaining though. Free drinks all night and a goody bag to take away, containing a squeezy stress relieving toy emblazoned with the words Frontlines Fuel of War, a copy of Supreme Commander and a copy of the original Titan Quest and its expansion pack, Immortal Throne. It was worth the trip for the goodies alone. EBay was made for this sort of stuff!*

Amongst the games on show was Moto GP 07, Stuntman Ignition and Ratatouille, but we ended up spending most of the evening playing KAOS studio's Frontlines Fuel of War, which is looking great and playing as smooth as a baby's bottom despite it only being in the pre-Alpha stage of development.

Following the initial pre-game address from the developers, where we were treated to a fancy trailer which can now be viewed somewhere online (try gametrailers.com), we hopped straight into some Frontlines LAN action where we took on a couple of mouthy Italians, a handful of Kaos reps and a few other members of the press who'd managed to blag there way to California - nice work!

The idea behind the game's story stems from Kaos's own research into the global battle over the world's oil which is currently going on in the world today. The game features two warring factions, the Western Coalition - that's us and America - and the Red Star Alliance, which consists of Chinese and Japanese forces. We'll talk more about the single player story and campaign in a future preview, but for now we're going to concentrating solely on the multiplayer.
