The Associated Press is reporting that Mercenaries 2 is already raising the ire of lawmakers loyal to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
In the game, "a power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela's oil supply, sparking an invasion that turns the country into a warzone"; something that it is perceived by supporter of Chavez as preparation work for a real invasion.
"I think the U.S. government knows how to prepare campaigns of psychological terror so they can make things happen later," Congressman Ismael Garcia said, refering to Mercenaries 2: World in Flames.
"Pandemic has no ties to the US government," Greg Richardson, Pandemic Studios' vice president of commercial operations, told the Associated Press. "Pandemic Studios is a private company, focusing solely on the development of interactive entertainment."
Gabriela Ramirez, a lawmaker loyal to Chavez, said that "the game sends a message to Americans: You have a danger next door, here in Latin America, and action must be taken. It's a justification for an imperialist aggression."
